Preparation of renewable JP-10 fuel by the lignocellulose platform compound of Dalian Chemical Institute

Recently, Li Ning, a researcher at the Research Center of Catalysis and New Materials, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhang Tao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have developed two new routes for the preparation of renewable JP-10 high-density fuel through the lignocellulose platform compound-furfuryl alcohol. Related work was published in "Angel. Chem. Int. Ed."

The synthesis of renewable aviation fuel using lignocellulose as a raw material is a research hotspot in international biomass refining. At present, domestic and foreign reports of lignocellulose aviation kerosene mainly focus on the synthesis of ordinary aviation kerosene. JP-10 fuel (hanging tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene) is a classic single-component high-density aviation fuel. Compared with ordinary aviation kerosene, JP-10 fuel has obvious performance advantages in density, freezing point, thermal stability, etc., so it is also called "super fuel". At present, JP-10 fuel is usually prepared from cyclopentadiene derived from fossil resources, which is relatively expensive, and due to limited raw material resources, it cannot be widely used in civil aviation.

Furfuryl alcohol is an important chemical obtained from hemicellulose in agricultural and forestry wastes. It has had decades of industrial production history so far. This work developed two new routes for synthesizing JP-10 fuel using furfuryl alcohol as a raw material, and a yield of approximately 65% ​​(calculated in carbon) can be obtained. After preliminary economic analysis, the biomass route can greatly reduce the cost of preparing JP-10 fuel.
